Kathryn Malloy, CD(DONA), LCCE
Where do you live?
I live in Chesapeake, Virginia. I serve the Hampton Roads area which includes Norfolk and Virginia Beach as well.
How long have you been teaching?
I am a life-long teacher, but have only taught childbirth education for one year.
What was your journey to a career in childbirth education?
After 20 years in the Early Childhood Education field, I changed focus to follow my passion: all things pregnancy, birth and babies!
How, where, and what do you teach?
I’m involved as a Volunteer Doula with the Healing Therapies Doula Team at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital in Virginia Beach, the Birthjourney Doula Collective Ana well as my own practice, Mindful Maternity Birth Services. My belief is that knowledge is power. The more knowledge and information a woman and her partner have, the better prepared they are to advocate for themselves through all the facets of birthing a baby.
Why did you choose to become a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator?
I felt it would enable me to serve clients better. I also felt it would give me credibility as a professional birth worker. Being associated with the Lamaze organization gives clients a sense that I know what I am talking about.
What is your goal as an educator?
My goal is to empower a woman, and her partner, to be their own advocates in all areas of pregnancy, birth and postpartum situations.
How do you use Lamaze resources to support you as an educator?
I tell all clients to seek information on the Lamaze website. There is a vast amount of information at their fingertips.
How could you suggest other members receive maximum value from Lamaze?
The Lamaze website has a multitude of resources for parents-to-be as well as for birth workers who desire to know the most current evidence-based information regarding pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum subjects.
When you're not teaching, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy nature, yoga, being with positive people and being a mom to my three children.
