2017 National Nurses Week Member Spotlight
Celeste Avolese, RN, LCCE
Where do you live?
Melville, New York
Why did you become a nurse and childbirth educator?
I always wanted to be a nurse.
What's your favorite moment from your career so far?
I worked in ICU in the early 1970s and took care of a patient who was in a motorcycle accident. I became very close to his family. He only recovered enough to spend the rest of his life in a nursing home. In 1999 I walked into a labor room to care for a patient and the husband asks me if I ever worked in ICU in 1974. I look at the his last name and it hits me...it was this young man's younger brother. He tells me his family talk about me often and he is going to call his mom and tell her she has nothing to worry about because I am the nurse taking care of his wife. Quite a sobering moment for me. His brother was still in the nursing home.
