2017 World Doula Week
Lakisa Muhammad, LCCE, CD (DONA)
Where do you live?
Phoenix, Arizona, USA
How long have you been in the childbirth field?
Why did you become a doula and childbirth educator?
The birth of my twins, my first borns, ignited in me a desire to help other women have safe and healthy birth experiences. My efforts also extend to the most vulnerable groups in the delivery room including women of color, teen moms, and incarcerated women. My hope is that all women and their families advocate for fair, just, and evidence based care for themselves.
What's your favorite moment from your career so far?
I will never forget when a mom of three who had experienced horrific treatment in a birth setting previously, who just wasn't sure if she was enough, who just didn't have the support she need in the past, looked up at with with her cheesy, gorgeous baby in her arms and said, "I did it!"
